The Milbank Area Bulldogs maintained their composure, but suffered a 43-36 non-conference basketball loss to the Castlewood Warriors Saturday, January 21, at the Milbank Armory. The Dawgs now sit at 5-8 for the season.

Milbank Area held a 11-9 lead at the end of the opening quarter. They hit a lull in the second quarter and scored just four points while Castlewood added 15 to take the lead 24-15 at halftime.

Milbank Area again found themselves behind 36-28 heading into the final quarter, but the Bulldogs battled back at both ends of the floor and went on an 8-0 run to even up the score. They were unable to sustain their momentum, however, and fell 43-36.

“We had a couple of tough stretches where we didn’t score,” stated Bulldog Head Coach Matt Bastian. “One of our scoring droughts came near the end of the game after we had put together an 8-0 run and were tied. I was proud of how we didn’t quit and fought back.”

Nate Bien led the team with 12 points and 7 rebounds. Jonny Ash followed with 8 points and 2 rebounds. Matt Lenards had 5 points, 3 boards, 1 assist, and 1 steal. Cody Dockter made 4 points and 2 rebounds. Mitch Quade added 4 points and 7 rebounds. James Weber tallied 3 points, 2 rebounds, and 1 steal. Also contributing was Derrick Aho with 1 rebound and Riley Wollschlager with 1 assist.

The Dawgs were 14-of-40 from the field for 35 percent shooting. They ended the contest with 32 rebounds, 6 steals, and 2 assists. They committed 13 turnovers.

Castlewood made 38 percent of its shots from the field -hitting 16 of 42 attempts, including six three-pointers. The Warriors secured the win with 24 rebounds, 12 steals, and 3 assists. They committed 7 turnovers.

Milbank Area will travel to Ortonville Tuesday, January 24. The longtime rivals will play a double header. Boys junior varsity takes the court at approximately 5:15 p.m. Varsity tips off around 8 p.m.
