MHS senior Caryssa Mielitz fired in 33 points and snared 14 rebounds to spark the Lady Bulldogs to a 62-52 victory over Morris, Minnesota, January 27, on the road. Milbank Area upped its season record to 9-6.
“In the first half, we were slow at finding the shooters and gave up way too many points and easy looks at the basket,” said Milbank Area Head Coach Brian Pauli. Offensively, we were very productive moving the ball and finding the open girl.” The Lady Bulldogs were 13-of-23 from the field in the first half, but trailed Morris 34-30 at the midway mark.
The Lady Bulldogs came out red hot in the second half. They fired in 32 points and held Morris to just 18. “In the second half, I thought we tightened up our defense, rebounded better, and played smart on offense,” Pauli stated. “It was a good win against a good Morris team.”
In addition to Mielitz’s 33 points and 14 rebounds, she was credited with 4 blocked shots, 1 assist, and 1 steal. Gabbi Cummins generated 8 points, 1 rebound, and 2 assists and Karlee Mertens contributed 6 points, 4 rebounds, and 1 assist.
Adding to the totals for the Lady Bulldogs were: Molly Rick, 4 points, 1 rebound, 2 assists, and 2 steals; Mikaela Hoeke, 4 points and 2 assists; Sophia Seffrood, 4 points and 1 blocked shot; and Taylor Thue, 3 points and 1 rebound. Mackayla Schuelke had 2 rebounds, 4 assists, and 1 steal.
Milbank Area made 54 percent of its shots from the field, hitting 23 of 43 attempts. The Lady Bulldogs won the game with 31 rebounds, 12 assists, 12 steals, and 5 blocked shots. They committed 13 turnovers.
Morris made 19 of 60 attempts from the field for 32 percent shooting. They ended the game with 37 rebounds, 12 steals, 2 assists, and 2 blocked shots. They committed 12 turnovers.
