Derald Daniel Hay, 90, an Army National Guard veteran and long-time Big Stone farmer died on March 29, 2017 in Montevideo, MN.

Funeral services will be Monday at 2:00 pm at Tabor United Methodist Church in Big Stone City, SD with Melanie Reiners officiating. Visitation will be Sunday evening from 5 to 7 at Mundwiler Funeral Home in Milbank.

Casket bearers will be his grandsons: Craig, Tony, Christopher, and Jeff Hay and Tyler Johnson and Chad Hay. Honorary bearers will be the American Legion Gertje Van Lith Post #229; granddaughters: Emily Johnson and Lindsey Hay; and great-grandchildren.

Derald Daniel Hay, son of Clayton and Josephine (Hinkels) Hay, was born May 10, 1926 in Milbank. He graduated from Big Stone High School. He was honorably discharged from the Army National Guard after serving during the Korean Conflict. After his time in service, Derald married Margaret McCausland September 4, 1955, in Brewster, MN.

Derald loved farming and woodworking. He was known for his sweet corn feeds in August and produced beautiful wood pieces during the winter months. He loved to drink coffee and shoot the breeze with family and neighbors. Derald was a proud and active member of the Big Stone American Legion. His family and friends heard many “army buddy” stories over the years.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret, Montevideo; sons, Scott, and wife, Cindy, Abilene, TX; Kirby, and wife, Paulette, Aberdeen, SD; Todd, and wife, Judy of Montevideo, MN; eight grandchildren: Craig Hay and wife, Lacy, Nacogdoches, TX, Tony Hay and wife Julie, Abilene, TX, Christopher Hay and wife Kylee, Granbury, TX, Jeff Hay of Abilene, TX, Lindsey Hay and Chad Hay, Aberdeen, SD, Tyler Johnson, Eagle Lake, MN, and Emily Johnson of Hutchinson, MN and six great grandchildren: Callie, Harper, Logan, Drew, Connor, and Landry.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 6 siblings, Sherm, Fred, Case, Ed, Dory Hay Scoblic, and Clela Hay McFarland. Derald was the last of that generation of the Hay Clan.
