The MHS girls golf team plans to replicate its trip to last year’s state tournament, according to Coach Mark Keeton. Keeton, who is beginning his seventh season as head coach, says, “To accomplish this, we need to finish in the top three teams at the Region 1A meet.”
The team will be led by seniors Mikaela Hoeke and Clare Van Dover, both state qualifiers last season, and Korinne Roggenbuck, who has varsity experience. Hoeke finished eighth at the Northeast Conference meet and tied for 78th at state, and Van Dover tied for 76th place during state competition.
Other state qualifiers who return from last season are Kylie Kasuske and Tori Quade. Quade captured sixth place in the NEC and tied for 84th at state. Kasuske tied for 74th at State. The roster also includes Alaina Rausch, who placed 13th in the NEC last year, and newcomers Ella Kasuske and Marion Mischel.
Keeton says, “We finished fourth at Regions last year, but still managed to qualify for State as a team. The girls were inexperienced, but continued to improve throughout the year. This year, as a team, we want to improve. We hope to be playing our best when Regions roll around.”
Keeton expects the most competition from Sisseton, Madison, Aberdeen Roncalli, and McCook Central. “Sisseton and Roncalli will be the teams to beat in the NEC,” he says.
The Lady Bulldogs begin their competitive season Thursday, April 13, at the Hamlin tournament. MHS hosts its only home meet, the POET Invitational, Monday, April 24, at Pine Hills Golf Course in Milbank.
