Milbank fifth-grader Nadia Thue, daughter of Chad and Amy Thue, was honored with a third place finish in the South Dakota State Grandparent Essay Contest. Nadia received a $100 check for her accomplishment during the Milbank Area Retired Teachers Association (MARTA) meeting on April 20.
Nadia wrote her essay about her grandma, Cheryl Conrad. Conrad is a member of MARTA and spent 42 years teaching at Koch School in Milbank. Nadia’s essay won first place in the local contest and advanced to the regional and state competitions.
“This is a real accomplishment for Nadia considering there were nearly 1,200 students in the statewide contest,” MARTA President Rhonda Preller said. “Nadia’s moving tribute to her Grandma Cheryl made the reader truly feel the love they share.” The top state winner was Emma Vandenbark from Winner. Second place went to Petra Mandy of Rapid City.
