Margaret Ellen Hay, age 85, died on May 3, 2017 in Montevideo, MN.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at 10:00 am at Tabor United Methodist Church in Big Stone City, SD. Visitation will be Monday evening from 5 to 7 at Mundwiler Funeral Home in Milbank. Burial will be at a later date at Greenwood Cemetery, Big Stone City.

Casket bearers will be her grandsons: Craig, Tony, Christopher, and Jeff Hay, Tyler Johnson and Chad Hay. Honorary bearers will be her granddaughters: Emily Johnson and Lindsey Hay; and great-grandchildren: Callie, Harper, Logan, Drew, Connor, and Landry; and Big Stone American Legion Auxiliary Gertje Van Lith Post #229.

Margaret Ellen (McCausland) Hay was born March 6, 1932, in Lake Park, (Dickenson County) Iowa. She graduated from high school in Brewster, MN. Margaret continued her education in Minnesota pursuing her passion in nursing. Margaret graduated from Fairview Hospital School of Nursing in 1953. She completed part of her training in Portland, Oregon. Margaret returned to Minneapolis to begin her career as a registered nurse. She provided one on one care to a child in Fargo, ND which forever touched Margaret’s heart.

Margaret was united in marriage with Derald Daniel Hay on September 4, 1955, in Brewster, MN. Margaret and Derald settled in the Big Stone City, SD area. Margaret worked at Whetstone Valley Nursing Home in Milbank. She later was the director of nursing at the Ortonville Hospital. Following her semi-retirement, she worked at Rice Memorial Hospital as an OR nurse.

Survivors include sons: Scott, and wife, Cindy, Abilene, TX; Kirby, and wife, Paulette, Aberdeen, SD; Todd, and wife, Judy of Montevideo, MN; eight grandchildren: Craig Hay and wife, Lacy, Nacogdoches, TX; Tony Hay and wife Julie, Abilene, TX; Christopher Hay and wife Kylee, Granbury, TX; Jeff Hay of Abilene, TX, Lindsey Hay and Chad Hay, Aberdeen, SD; Tyler Johnson, Eagle Lake, MN; and Emily Johnson of Hutchinson, MN; and six great grandchildren: Callie, Harper, Logan, Drew, Connor, and Landry.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Myrtle; husband, Derald on March 29, 2017; an infant brother, Robert Lynn McCausland; and brother, Howard McCausland.

Margaret’s family suggests memorials be given to Rice Hospice-Montevideo in lieu of flowers and plants. Rice Hospice, 301 Becker Ave. SE, Willmar, MN 56201.
