Food and family intertwine in the 2017 One Book South Dakota selection, “Kitchens of the Great Midwest” by J. Ryan Stradal. The Babes and... Grant County Public Library to Host One Book South Dakota Discussion

Food and family intertwine in the 2017 One Book South Dakota selection, “Kitchens of the Great Midwest” by J. Ryan Stradal.
The Babes and Bob Book Club, along with the Grant County Public Library, will host a reading discussion on the book on Monday, May 22, at 6:30 p.m. at the library. Dorothy Liegl, a South Dakota Humanities Council scholar, will lead the discussion.

“Everyone in the community is welcome to read the book and join in the discussion,” stated library director Jody Carlson. “Several copies of the book are currently available at the Grant County Library for checkout. Enjoy this novel from the New York Times Bestseller list and join the fun and fellowship of a book discussion.”

“Kitchens of the Great Midwest” centers on Eva Thorvald, born into a food-obsessed family and blessed with a uniquely sensitive palate. From Lutheran Church bake-offs to chili-pepper eating contests, this book captures the spirit of the Midwest, the rise of foodie culture, and the ways food creates community and influences identity.

A native of Hastings, MN, Stradal edits the fiction section of “The Nervous Breakdown” and works as an editor-at-large at Unnamed Press. He now lives in Los Angeles and has worked as a TV producer, notably for the History Channel’s “Ice Road Truckers” and Discovery Channel’s “Deadliest Catch.”

The South Dakota Humanities Council coordinates the One Book South Dakota program, as well as the South Dakota Festival of Books and the Speakers Bureau programs. To learn more, visit www.sdhumanities.org.
