Tom Hartman of Milbank was ordained by Bishop Paul J. Swain of the Diocese of Sioux Falls on  June 2, during a special ceremony at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Sioux Falls. He joined Rev. Mr. Brian Eckrich, Rev. Mr. Andrew Thuringer, Rev. Mr. Joseph Scholten, Rev. Mr. Timothy Smith and Rev. Mr. Tyler Mattson, as they entered the Order of Priesthood. Saturday, June 3, Father Tom was the celebrant of a Mass of Thanksgiving at St. Lawrence Church in Milbank at 5 p.m. A reception followed in the St. Lawrence School gymnasium.

Father Tom is a 1990 graduate of Milbank High School. He became a student at Holy Apostles College and Seminary in Cromwell, Connecticut, in 2012. The process of becoming a priest is usually a six-year journey, but Father Tom took night courses and online classes and was able to finish a Bachelor of Arts degree sooner than expected. He completed his Masters of Divinity Degree from Holy Apostles and graduated on May 6, after just five years of study.

Father Tom is staying with his family and mother, Loreen Hartman, in Milbank. He is awaiting his official assignment, but knows he will be placed in a South Dakota east river Catholic Church. “It will likely be in a larger city where I will serve as an associate under an experienced priest,” Father Tom said.
