James Voeltz, age 92, of Milbank, formerly of Big Stone City, died on July 1, 2017, at Milbank Care and Rehabilitation Center.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 8 at 2:00 p.m. at Parkview United Methodist Church in Milbank. Dr. Peter Reynen will officiate and burial will be in Mound Cemetery in Ortonville. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. The vocalists will be Tim Mundwiler and Kaylee Arlt. Honorary bearers will be: Phillip Dudley, Joe Dudley, Chris Voeltz, Ian Madsen, Mathew Donat, and Gary Voegtli.
James Oliver Voeltz was born September 13, 1924, in Appleton, MN. He was the son of Glen and Alice (Bergstadt) Voeltz. He completed a seventh grade education and helped his father on the family farm. He worked cattle on horseback as well as other farm duties. He was united in marriage with Mary Tillman on June 30, 1947, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Milbank. They moved to Lead, SD and James worked for the railroad for a period of time.
The family moved to Bemidji, MN and James worked for Ottertail Power Company. He transferred to Milbank in 1974, and has since resided. James had a heart attack at the age of 56 and he retired from Ottertail in 1980. His wife, Mary died on November 4, 1999.
James enjoyed his retirement years. He constructed their home in Northern Minnesota, and at 70 years old, he and Mary built their A-frame home, seven miles east of Milbank. He enjoyed auctions, flea markets, and threshing shows. He had the heart of a farmer and enjoyed driving around while observing crops during the growing season. He almost always had his harmonica in his pocket. He loved to restore classic and antique cars. He was a humble man with many talents.
Left to cherish his memory are his dear friend, Fay Webster, of Clinton, MN; three children: Gregory (Ester) Voeltz of Denver, CO; Jeff (Elaine) Voeltz of Austin, TX; Renee Voeltz Osborne of Milbank, SD; eight grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; siblings: Virginia Dawson of Ortonville, MN; and Millard Voeltz of Milbank, SD; and many nieces and nephews. James was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary; son, Patrick Michael Voeltz; daughter, Pam Voeltz Dudley; two sisters: Gloria and Robin; and two brothers, Gary and Keith.
