Several swimmers from the Milbank Area Lions Swim Team earned top places in the state during the 2017 South Dakota Long Course State Swim Meet in Aberdeen this past weekend, July 28-30.

Eleven local swimmers took part in the meet. They broke 18 team records and placed in the top eight in 26 different events including the 11-12 year old girls 200 freestyle and 200 medley relays. “I am extremely proud of how our kids performed,” stated MALST head coach Jodi Street. “We competed against the best competition in the state and came home with personal best times and records broken. It was an exciting meet for us and always great to see our seasonal swimmers compete well against the year-round teams.”

Coach Jodi also noted this was the first time in many years Milbank had a relay compete in the State A Championships. “To have four strong 11-12 year old girls pull off a sixth and seventh place finish was extraordinary,” She added. Relay team members were Maurina Street, Rylie Overby, Hallie Schulte and Laney Forrette.

Several new records were set by the Milbank swimmers. Liam Street broke two of his own records in the boys 7-8 50 and 100 breast along with the 200 IM and 200 free records previously held by Carter Gloe.

Gloe broke two of his past records in the 50 back and 200 free along with a 100 free record held by Austin Berens and 100 back by Ben Forrette, both set in 2005.

Maurina Street broke a 2016 record held by her sister, Amaya Street, in the girls 11-12 50 back. Hallie Schulte broke her past record in the girls 11-12 50 butterfly. Elijah Fraasch set a new team record in the boys 15-16 100 fly previously held by Alex DeFea.

Amaya Street set new team records in all seven events she swam in during the meet. She broke four of her own records in the 200 free, 400 free, 800 free and 400 IM. She also broke 2007 records of Natalie Reynen in the 50 free and 100 breast, and a 2012 record of Hannah Tietjen in the 100 free.

Liam Street was named the swimmer of the meet. He medaled in all seven of his events and was awarded the fourth place high point trophy in the boys 7-8 age group. “At a young age, his hard work, ability to swim all the strokes and short or long distances makes him a successful swimmer,” said Coach Jodi.

The Sealions will finish up their season at the Seasonal Long Course Championship Meet in Huron this weekend, August 4-6.
