The Milbank VFW Teener baseball team punched their ticket to the State 15-16 VFW tournament. They placed second in the 16U Northeast Region tournament July 26-28, at Legion Field in Milbank. The state tournament will be played in Beresford August 4-6.
Milbank faces Wagner at noon on Friday, August 4, in the opening round. The opening ceremony, recognizing all players, teams, coaches, and officials is scheduled for approximately 4:45 p.m.
Other first round action: West Central takes on Dell Rapids at 2:30 p.m., Volga faces Madison White at 5:30 p.m., and Beresford plays Salem-Montrose-Canova at 8 p.m. Play continues Saturday and Sunday. The championship game starts Sunday, August 6, at 5 p.m.
Region tournament Play
Milbank hosted the region tournament. They took on Castlewood/Clear Lake in the opening game of the tournament and secured a 8-4 victory. The Teeners got their bats rolling early and built up a 6-2 lead after the first three innings. They held on for the win. Kaden Krause started on the mound for Milbank and struck out nine batters. He gave up just two hits in five innings. Brodie Holtquist came in on relief to finish the game. He sat down 10 batters and allowed one hit.
Milbank faced Volga in semi-final action Thursday and fell 16-3. Milbank took the early lead at 3-0 after one inning, but gave up eight runs in the fifth and could not overcome the deficit.
Jake Fox started on the mound for Milbank. He struck out 11 batters and gave up five hits and eight runs in five innings. Eli Fischer came in to relieve Fox. He pitched one inning and sat down three batters. Braden Femling finished for Milbank.
The Teeners took on Sisseton in the consolation round and came away with a 10-9 victory. The win secured a spot in the championship game of the tournament and a berth to the state tourney. (Two teams from the region advance to state.) Milbank trailed 6-3 going into the sixth inning when their offense got hot. Milbank scored runs by Tate Stricherz, Jake Karges, Fox, and Holtquist in the surge. They locked in the victory in the final inning with runs by Stricherz and Karges. Holtquist was the starting pitcher. He struck out nine batters and gave up six hits and five runs. Karges finished the game with seven strikeouts and gave up four hits and four runs.
Milbank faced Volga in the championship – meeting for the second time in the tournament. The Teeners defeated Volga 13-12 to force a second championship game between the two teams. Milbank fell 8-5 in the second championship game. They had control early with a 2-0 lead, but Volga came back with six runs in the third inning and two in the fourth to take the region title. Zippy Bock started on the mound for Milbank. He struck out six of seven batters in the first two innings but it was not enough.
