Bulldog Boys Golf Tees Off Season

The Milbank High School boys golf team started its season with a fourth place finish at the Sioux Valley Invitational in Volga Monday, August 14. Milbank finished its opening round with a team score of 387. Aberdeen Roncalli won the event with a 309. Sioux Valley came in second with a 319. Sisseton took home third place with a 337. Brookings junior varsity scored 399, and Redfield-Doland, hit 423.
“When looking at our score from last year at this time, we made a slight improvement,” stated Bulldog Head Golf Coach Mark Keeton. “I witnessed a lot of good shots, but I also noticed some areas we need to work on. As a team, we really need to tighten up our game on and near the green. We gave away too many strokes chipping and putting.”
Junior Connor VanVooren led the Bulldogs with a 12th place finish. He shot a 18-hole round of 85 (40-45). Senior Adam Thomas was just one shot from placing in the top 15. He finished at 89 (45-44). Rounding out the individual scores for Milbank were senior Noah Pillatzki, 103 (53-50); senior Isaac Nolz, 110 (60-50); and senior Gage Sayler, 114 (57-57).
For the junior varsity, Logan Meyer, Chase Pinkert, Jake Trevett, and Keaton Hagen competed for the Dawgs. Meyer led the team with a 104. Pinkert scored 105; Trevett, 111, and Hagen, 119.
Keeton says he plans to rely on the experience of Adam Thomas and Noah Pillatzki this season. “I will expect more of them because of their experience,” he said. “Every year the slate is wiped clean. I try to take the golfers that can play 18 to as many meets as I can. Nothing beats gaining experience.”
Keeton also said the Bulldogs will focus on their short game. “We want to try and improve each and every week,” he added. “We will focus on our short game from 100 yards in. We recently purchased some kids swimming pools we are setting up at different distances. This gives the athletes a good visual to take aim at which will help work on those awkward mid-range shots.”
Isaac Nolz, Chase Pinkert, and Gage Sayler also bring senior leadership to the team. Juniors on the roster include Keaton Hagen and Connor VanVooren. Joe Harstad is the lone sophomore. Logan Meyer, Christian Peery, Jake Trevett, and Eric Van Sambeek are the freshmen players.
Middle school golfers will also compete this season. On the roster are eighth-graders Logan Fenhaus, Tyler Sessler, and Keegan Wheeler and seventh-graders Mason Cordingley, Nathan Pillatzki, Carter Phinney, and Paul Van Dover.
