Duane Wesley “Dutch” Chamley, age 88, of Milbank died on August 18, 2017, at Park Place Care Center.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, September 1, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Milbank. Father Gary DeRouchey will officiate. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery in Egan, SD.
Military honors will be provided by American Legion, Birch-Miller Post #9; V.F.W. Grant County Post #3486; V.V.A. Northeast SD Chapter #1054; and
Duane “Dutch” Wesley Chamley was born on May 20, 1929, in Sisseton, SD. He was the son of Arthur and Sylvia Chamley, and the youngest of nine children. He lived with his parents who were engaged in farming. They later moved to Egan, SD, where he attended and graduated from Egan High School.
Duane served as a Medic in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corp during the Korean conflict. After his honorable discharge, he enrolled at a Junior College in Aberdeen, SD, to study Radiology. Upon the completion of that program, Duane worked in the field of radiology for twelve years before moving to Illinois.
Duane was united in marriage with Paula Hansen in February of 1957. Together they were blessed with five sons: Mark, Paul, Tom, Matthew and Joseph. Duane worked in various careers throughout his lifetime, ending his career as Manager at a waste water plant at Eveleth, MN, where enjoyed the natural beauty of the northern woods.
Duane retired to Milbank, SD, in 2002, and was a resident of Park Place Assisted Living from 2004 until his death on August 18, 2017. He was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church. He was known for his hearty laugh and his entertaining stories of the past. He enjoyed fishing and bird watching, traveling across the country to go “birding”. Duane will be remembered as being a great family man.
Duane is survived by his sons: Mark (Connie) Chamley of Bettendorf, IA; Paul (Renee) Chamley of Larkspur, CO; Tom Chamley of Freeport, IL; Matthew (Margie) Chamley of Janesville, WI; and Joseph (Amy) Chamley of Champagne, IL; 16 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings: Lloyd, Frances, Sonny, Edith, Lorraine, Marjorie, Casey, and Keith.
