Lady Bulldogs Suffer Volleyball Setback to Arlington

The Milbank Area Lady Bulldogs suffered a 3-0 loss to the traditionally tough Arlington Cardinals in non-conference high school volleyball action Tuesday, September 13, on the road. Milbank Area dropped to 3-5 on the season.
Milbank Area fell behind early in the opening set at 4-9. They battled back, but Arlington maintained a 4 to 5 point advantage throughout the set, and the Lady Bulldogs lost 25-18.
The locals struggled in the second set. Milbank Area got behind 3-9 when Arlington went on a nine point run to widen the gap to 3-18. The Lady Bulldogs were unable to recover and fell in the second set 8-25.
Another slow start found Milbank Area trailing early on in the third set at 4-8 and again at 11-14. The Cardinals put together another run of points and broke the game open at 11-22 late in the set. The Lady Bulldogs were unable to stage a comeback and fell 14-25 to end the match.
Molly Rick led Milbank Area with 11 kills on 27-30 hitting, 4-6 serving and 11 digs. Jaecy Engebretson followed with six kills on 25-29 hitting, one ace on 8-8 serving, 10 assists on 53-53 setting and 3 digs. Gabbi Cummins tallied four kills on 21-26 hitting, 3-5 serving, five assists on 28-28 setting and nine digs. Jaden Hoeke contributed three kills on 10-13 hitting, one ace on 7-7 serving and 2 digs while Makayla Johnson added two kills on 7-12 hitting, 2-2 serving and three digs.
Also adding to the totals for the Lady Bulldogs were Maty Lightfield, 4-4 serving, two assists on 12-12 setting and six digs; Tonya Meyer, 2-2 serving and seven digs; Katie Wollschlager, five digs, and Elisabeth Schwenn, 1-1 serving, 4-4 setting with two assists and two digs.
The Lady Bulldogs will travel to Sisseton Thursday, September 14, for a rival Northeast Conference matchup with the Redmen.
