The Lady Bulldogs tennis team faced two solid opponents during a triangular meet in Brookings on September 23. Milbank fell 6-3 to Brookings, and 9-0 to Yankton.
Rhianna Welberg was the only double winner in the Brookings match. She won the No. 4 singles match and teamed up with Rhianna Cantine for a win at No. 2 doubles. Milbank Head Coach Jim Dahl said, “It was her strongest outing thus far in the serving and groundstroke areas. Unfortunately, she was our only singles victory in this match. I felt we would be able to at least split with them in singles, but they outplayed us by being more aggressive and consistent.”
Milbank also suffered a 9-0 loss to Yankton. “Yankton proved to be a formidable opponent,” said Dahl. “Their ability to handle the racket with all types of strokes was too much for us to mount any serious threat to their game.”
Milbank has two regular season matches remaining on their schedule. They will host Aberdeen Roncalli Tuesday, September 26, and will then travel to Benson, MN, Thursday, September 28. The team will then look ahead to the state tournament which is scheduled for Thursday, October 5, through Saturday, October 7, in Sioux Falls.
