MHS golfers Conner VanVooren and Adam Thomas punched their tickets to the 2017 State Class A Boys Golf Tournament. The duo earned a berth at State by placing at the Region 1A meet in Dell Rapids Monday, September 25. The state tournament is Monday, October 2, and Tuesday, October 3, at Dakota Dunes.
“Our scores were surprisingly low considering the tough conditions,” stated Bulldog Head Golf Coach Mark Keeton. “As a team we seemed to get off to a slow start which is not uncommon when dealing with nerves at the region meet. I was proud of the boys, as many of them hung in there and improved on their back nine. Unfortunately, we were unable to avoid that big number or two that really hurts the card. In the end, a big congrats to Conner and Adam for qualifying.”
VanVooren led the Bulldogs in 14th place with an 18-hole round of 94. Thomas finished with a 101 and 19th place. Also competing for Milbank, were Isaac Nolz at 103 and Noah Pillatzki and Gage Sayler, both at 108.
Aberdeen Roncalli was crowned the Region 1A champion with a team score of 324. Sisseton was the runner-up with a 329, and Sioux Valley took third with a 337. The top three teams qualify for the state tournament.
Other team totals were: Madison, 343; Dell Rapids, 367; Milbank, 406; Groton Area, 429; McCook Central-Montrose, 440; Tri-Valley, 441; and Tiospa Zina, 461.
State qualifiers: (l. to r.) Conner VanVooren and Adam Thomas. (Back) Coach Mark Keeton.
