Marlene Ann Storm, age 80 of Milbank died September 29, 2017, at Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.
Memorial services will be held on Friday, October 6, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. at Living Word Lutheran Church in Milbank. Rev. Kent Groethe will officiate.
Visitation will be held at Mundwiler Funeral Home on Thursday, October 5, from 5 – 7 p.m. Burial will be in the Milbank City Cemetery.
Casket bearers will be Josh Schaefer, Ryan Hedge, David “Shavey” Hoffman, Jeff Carlin, Logan Gerdes, and Lee Tesch. Honorary bearers will be Marlene’s grandchildren and all of the drivers from Ken’s Transfer Inc.
Marlene Westphal was born November 28, 1936 to August and Sena (LaMeyer) Westphal in Twin Brooks, SD. She had five siblings: Joyce, Betty, Jerry, Larry, and Terry. In 1941, the family moved to Adrian, MN, where she attended school for two years. In 1943, the family moved back to Twin Brooks where she lived and attended school though the 8th grade. Marlene then attended Milbank High School where she graduated in 1954.
After graduation, Marlene worked at the High School as the secretary. In 1956, she met and married Dean O’Farrell at the American Lutheran Church in Milbank. Marlene and Dean moved their family to Compton, CA. They moved back to the Milbank area in 1959.
On July 14, 1972, Marlene married Neil Storm. Marlene remained in the Milbank area throughout her married life with Neil. She worked at Milbank Insurance Co. for two years, then part-time at the Lantern Inn for several years. She also worked with her husband, Neil, in his trucking business that they owned for over 30 years. Marlene attended the American Lutheran Church in Milbank where she was baptized and then confirmed on December 18, 1955.
Marlene enjoyed spending time with her family, golfing, reading, and gardening. She liked to walk and spend time with the Tuesday coffee gals and friends. Marlene was a volunteer at the church and took on the job of being the money counter.
Marlene recently resided at Park Place in Milbank, where she made many friends. She also was a charter member of Living Word Lutheran Church.
Blessed to have shared her life are her children: Vicky (Kevin “Chip”) Hedge of Milbank, SD; Larry (Jan) Storm of Milbank, SD; Randy (Marci) O’Farrell of Rancho Mirage, CA; Tim Storm of Milbank, SD; Cindy Gerdes of Milbank, SD; and Sheila Parker of Bullhead City, AZ; Sisters: Joyce Travaglio of Chippewa Falls, WI; Betty Hoffman of Twin Brooks, SD; and Terry ( Jon) Headley of Fridley, MN; brothers: Jerry (Anna) Westphal of New London, MN; and Larry (Sylvia) Westphal of Torrance, CA; 21 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; many nieces; nephews; and other relatives.
Marlene was preceded in death by: her parents: August and Sena Westphal; husband, Neil in 2004; son, Scott; grandsons: Jason and Isaiah; brother in laws: Jim Hoffman and Nick Travaglio; brother in law and sister in law: Norris and Doris Storm.
