Norman Melvin Christensen was born near Twin Brooks on December 15, 1920. He was the son of James P. and Johanna (Madsen) Christensen.
Norman attended country grade school at Twin Brooks #4 West, and later at Milbank High School. He devoted his entire life to farming west of Twin Brooks on the land his father began farming in 1907. After retiring, he remained on the farm, taking pleasure in observing the variety of wildlife that would pass through his yard and enjoying the company of his many visitors. He shared his love of butterflies with the local school children, collecting monarch caterpillars and bringing them to the classrooms. The children would study the monarch butterfly life cycle, as the caterpillars made their chrysalis and then emerged as butterflies. After 92 years on the farm, he moved into Milbank. In December of 2016, Norman became a resident of St. William’s Care Center.
Left to mourn his departure are many nieces and nephews who enjoyed his wit and attention when they were children, and as adults will miss him greatly. Norman will be remembered as a kind, quiet and gentle man.
One brother and five sisters preceded him in passing.
