The MHS girls’ tennis team stretched their stamina in Brandon Valley on Friday, September 7, and and Saturday, September 8. According to Coach Jim Dahl, “Having six duals in two days is a very good conditioner for our team. It is beneficial to have this format with only a little more than three weeks before the state tournament. It tests a player’s endurance as well.”

In Friday’s matches, the girls defeated both Vermillion and Spearfish at 8-1, and lost to Sioux Falls Lincoln. “I was extremely proud of their efforts and sportsmanship. Team victories over Vermillion, Spearfish, and Rapid City Central have boosted us to seven season wins,” Dahl said. In individual play, Hallie Essington Rhianna Cantine, Hattie Muellenbach, and Alexis Ninneman all were quadruple winners on the first day of the meet.

Saturday’s play saw the Lady Bulldogs facing Brandon Valley, Harrisburg, and Rapid City Central. They added another win to their tally with a 5-4 victory over Rapid City.

The team earned three wins during the weekend and nearly a fourth. On day two, Jenna Johnson was a triple winner but effort by Rhianna Welberg also earned respect from Coach Dahl. “In the Rapid City Central match – our most competitive match of the weekend- the team score was tied at 4-4 with Rhianna Welberg’s singles match in play. Rhianna played her best match of the year in terms of consistency and decision-making to win 8-5 and earn her team the 5-4 victory.”
