Marvel Black, age 93, passed away on Wednesday, September 26, 2018, at Milbank Care and Rehabilitation Center in Milbank, SD.

Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday, October 2, 2018, at 1:00 p.m. at Living Word Lutheran Church in Milbank. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. Rev. Kent Groethe will officiate, and Judy Sprung will be the organist. Burial will take place at the Milbank City Cemetery.

Casket bearers will be: Ron Anderson, John Gesswein, Noel White, Ardell Nelson, Tim Ramsey, and Marty Buttke.

Marvel Marie Augusta Scherb was born on October 4, 1924, to Frank and Linda (Jahnke) Scherb in Kiester, MN. Marvel attended school through the eighth grade. Throughout her life, Marvel lived in Bricelyn, MN, from 1947 to 1951, Sleepy Eye, MN, from 1951 until 1971, and Madelia, MN, from 1971 to 1981. While she resided in Minnesota, she worked as a printer. Marvel moved to Big Stone Lake, SD, in 1981, where she resided until 2006, when she moved to Milbank. She remained in Milbank until her passing.

Marvel married Dwight Black on Aug. 29, 1947. They were blessed with 50 years of marriage. Dwight passed away in 1998. From this union they had two children: Mary and Craig. She was a homemaker while residing in SD.

Marvel was a member of the Legion Auxiliary and of Living Word Lutheran Church in Milbank. She was very active in the church and helped whenever needed. She attended Circle, quilting club, and Bible studies. She loved animals, reading, gardening, traveling with Dwight, and was known to collect rocks from places they visited.

Cherishing Marvel’s memory are her children: Mary (Harold) Wilson of Breckenridge, CO; and Craig Black of Austin, TX; granddaughter, Vanessa Black of Austin, TX; and brother, Garlin (Sonia) Scherb of Kiester, MN.

Preceding her in death are her parents: Frank and Linda Scherb; husband, Dwight; and sister, Ardis Bergh of Prior Lake, MN.
