The Bulldog cross country teams competed in the Region 1A meet in Webster on Thursday, October 11. Webster had received a blast of early October snow the day before and it blanketed the town and the course.

Coach Eric Townsend said, “Both our teams battled crazy conditions as the entire course was snowy, icy, and slushy. Times were basically thrown out and places and competing were all that mattered. Both Milbank teams fought through those conditions to punch their ticket to the State A meet. The girls’ team repeated as Region 1A team champions by defeating both Webster and Redfield. The boys’ team was narrowly defeated by Webster to garner a runner-up team finish.” The top three teams in the Region and the top 20 individuals qualify for South Dakota’s State meet.

Along with winning team plaques, both teams also had five top- 20 individual finishes. Nick Batchelor took first for the boys’ team and overall, Zippy Bock came in sixth. Alex Farrell rolled in at No. 11, Nathan Loutsch at No.15, and James Batchelor at No.18.

For the girls, top-20 finishers were Maurina Street at fourth and Danica Schulte at fifth. Amaya Street came in at No. 11, Ashlyn O’Farrell at No. 15, and Taylor Thue at No. 16.

The Bulldogs head to the State A meet on Saturday, October 20, in Sioux Falls at Yankton Trail Park. The Class A boys’ race is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. and the Class A girls’ race is set for 2 p.m. Medals will be awarded to the top 25 individuals in each class and the top six teams. Awards are scheduled for 3 p.m. that day.
