Daryl Gordon Spiering, passed away at the Milbank Care and Rehabilitation Center in Milbank, SD, on October 23, 2018, at the age of 91.

Graveside services for Daryl Spiering will be held at a later date at St. Paul’s Cemetery in Albee, SD.

Daryl was born to Herbert and Edythe Spiering at home in the Vernon Township, Grant County, SD, on September 13, 1927. He attended country school and later graduated from Revillo High School in 1945. He enlisted in the Navy after high school and spent time in Guam during WWII as a SeaBee. On June 6, 1948, he married Virginia “Ginger” Benshoof and began farming in the Revillo area. He and his wife had three of their children while living on the farm: Geoffry, Karyl, and David.

After nine years of farming and milking cows Daryl decided he wanted to be a teacher like his wife who had started teaching right out of high school. He moved his family to Spearfish, SD, to attend Black Hills State Teachers College. While in Spearfish, he worked part time for Pratt Dray and Storage and frequently took jobs moving people to Buffalo, WY, at the base of the Big Horn Mountains. Daryl decided that was where he wanted to live and teach. After two years in Spearfish, he moved his family back to Revillo, and finished college at Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen, SD. Later, Daryl moved his family to Tripp, SD, starting his Industrial Arts teaching career. Tripp was where their fourth child, Jill Rojas, was born. After teaching in Tripp for three years, the family moved to Merrill, OR. Both Daryl and Ginger taught in Merrill, OR, until 1968, when he was hired to teach Industrial Arts in Buffalo, WY. He lived and taught in Buffalo, WY, until his retirement in 1988.

Daryl loved to hunt, fish and look for arrow heads. He also loved to raise animals and birds. He and Ginger moved to Stockton, MO, for a few years and then to Apache Junction, AZ. Finally, they moved to Milbank, SD, where they remained until he passed away.

Daryl is survived by his four children: Geoffry Spiering of Buffalo, WY; Karyl McBride of Westminster, CO; David Spiering of Des Moines, IA; and Jill Rojas of Buffalo, WY; ten grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Julie Jones of Logansport, IN. Daryl was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia “Ginger”; his sister, Nyla Rose; and his parents.
