Laura (Kunkel) Blanshan was born on January 25, 1929, in Mountain Lake, MN, to Julius and Pauline (Zimmer) Kunkel. She was baptized on February 25, 1929, and confirmed on March 29, 1942, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mountain Lake. She attended school in the area through eighth grade.

On June 24, 1947, Laura was united in marriage to Howard Blanshan. Together, they raised five children. Laura did many things to make a living for her family but she was a very gifted seamstress and did alterations for many years.

Laura adored her family and loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. One of the things she loved to do most was taking scenic drives through the refuge when they would take her along. Laura had a love and great support for the local high school sports, especially basketball. She watched her children participate and even went to games after her children had grown up. She also loved her Minnesota Twins; participating in the caravans and rarely missing a game.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Larry (Diane) Blanshan, Donna (Chris) Moen, Mark (Rebecca) Blanshan, and Joan (Steven) Stern; son-in-law, Keith Rolloff; ten grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Augusta Heintzelman and Hertha Holland; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death are her husband, Howard in 1993; her parents; daughter, Diane Rolloff; granddaughter, Jodi Bennett; seven brothers; and six sisters.
