Ten year old, Kalli Grong of Milbank won the championship title in the Bowhunter Freestyle event in the Cub division of South Dakota’s National Field Archery Association Competition. Kalli began practicing archery in January 2018 by enrolling in the Grant County 4-H shooting sports program. Mark Veen of Bent Arrow Archery Range and Pro Shop in Milbank helped her prepare for the competition. Kalli is the daughter of Evan and Angie Grong.
The young archer vied with other shooters under 12 years old in a two-day tournament in Yankton March 30-31. Participants shot 60 arrows each day. Kalli scored 293 points out of a possible 300 by hitting the “X” with 23 of 60 arrows the first day. On the second day, she began the competition with a 7 point lead. Sunday she ended with the exact same score as Saturday (293 with 23 X’s) for a final score of 586 with 46 X’s to take the State win.
Evan Grong said, “This is an amazing sport with an incredible group of individuals volunteering their time to coach, instruct and mentor the youth of this area.”
Kalli also plans to be a contestant in South Dakota’s 4-H Shooting Sports Competition to be held in Fort Pierre the last weekend of April.
