Janeth Payán, age 19, of Summit, SD, passed away on June 2, 2019. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, June 8, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. at Mundwiler Funeral Home in Milbank. Visitation will be held on Friday, June 7, from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home with a prayer service starting at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the funeral service on Saturday. Padre Davíd Garza will celebrate the Mass, and burial will be at Milbank City Cemetery.
Casket bearers will be: Garrett Fonder, Rohany Payán, Fabian Payán, Darin Fonder, Andres Gonzales, and Caden Bjordahl.
Honorary bearers will be: Rohany Payán, Silicia Montes, Selena Payán, Julie Payán, Carol Payán, Mia Payán, Rohanito Payán, Fabian Payán, Garrett Fonder, Alicia Jurado, Jesús Payán, María Luísa, and her beloved dogs, Maddie and Mopar.
Janeth Silicia Payán-Montes was born on June 5, 1999, in Nuevo Casas Grandes, Chihuahua, Mexico. She was the beloved daughter of Rohany Payán and Silicia Montes. Janeth spent her first three years in Mexico. She moved to Greeley, CO, when she was three years old and resided there until she was a third grader. She then moved to Milbank, SD, where she attended school and graduated from Milbank High School with the Class of 2017. In 2018, she moved to Summit, SD, with her fiancé, Garrett Fonder.
Janeth worked at Montage in Milbank while she attended high school. She later worked as a correctional officer in Sisseton, SD, and at H&R Block in Watertown, SD. While in school, Janeth participated in a number of sports including volleyball and cheerleading.
Janeth was a very independent and strong young woman. She enjoyed driving fast and a loud exhaust, occasionally partaking in a friendly race. She liked picnics, naps, chocolate milk, tattoos, and suntanning. She always liked to look pretty and especially made sure her eyebrows looked good.
Janeth was a caring person and would always put others before herself. She was straight forward with people and had a bit of a mischievous side. She wanted to go to school for translating and wanted to use her skills to help others. She hoped to someday have children of her own and foster and adopt children. She was very excited to marry Garrett Fonder. She appreciated his inquisitive nature and how talkative he is. Despite Janeth’s health challenges, she was resilient. She remained strong and never lost hope. She was proud of the health challenges she conquered.
Janeth is survived by her parents: Rohany Payán and Silicia Montes of Milbank, SD; sisters: Selena Payán of Watertown, SD; Julie Payán of Milbank, SD; Carol Payán of Milbank, SD; and Mia Payán of Milbank, SD; brother, Rohanito of Milbank, SD; grandmother, Alicia Jurado of Mexico; grandfather, Uriel Montes of Mexico; Godmother, María Luísa of Greeley, CO; many aunts, uncles, and cousins; and her soon to be family-in-law.
She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Jesús; and her grandmother, Mely.

Janeth Silicia Payán-Montes nació el 5 de junio de 1999 en Nuevo Casas Grandes, Chihuahua, México. Era la hija amada de Rohany Payán y Silicia Montes. Ella pasó sus primeros tres años en México. Se mudó a Greeley, Colorado, cuando tenía tres años y se quedó allá hasta tercero de primaria. Después se mudó a Milbank, South Dakota, donde asistió a la escuela y se graduó de Milbank High School con la generación de 2017. En 2018, se mudó a Summit, South Dakota, con su prometido, Garrett Fonder.
Janeth trabajó para Montage en Milbank cuando asistía a la escuela. Luego, trabajó como oficial correccional en Sisseton y para H&R Block en Watertown. Cuando era estudiante, participó en deportes, incluyendo voleibol y porrista.
Janeth era una mujer muy fuerte e independiente. Disfrutaba de los carros rápidos y un mofle ruidoso, a veces participando en una carrera amistosa. A ella le gustaba ir de picnic, tomar una siesta, la leche de chocolate, los tatuajes, y tomar el sol. Le gustaba vestirse y maquillarse bien, poniendo atención especial a sus cejas.
Janeth era una persona cariñosa y siempre pensaba en los demás antes que en ella. Era directa al expresarse y era un poco traviesa. Quería estudiar para ser traductora y usar sus habilidades para ayudar a otra gente. Quería ser madre un día y acoger a los huérfanos. Estaba muy emocionada de casarse con Garrett Fonder. Apreciaba su naturaleza inquisitiva y que Garrett es un hombre muy conversador. A pesar de sus problemas de salud, Janeth era perseverante. Permaneció fuerte y nunca perdió las esperanzas. Ella estaba muy orgullosa de superar sus desafíos de salud.
A Janeth le sobreviven sus padres: Rohany Payán y Silicia Montes de Milbank, SD; sus hermanas: Selena Payán de Watertown, SD; Julie Payán de Milbank, SD; Carol Payán de Milbank, SD; y Mia Payán de Milbank, SD; su hermano, Rohanito de Milbank, SD; su abuela, Alicia Jurado de México; su abuelo, Uriel Montes de México; su madrina, María Luísa de Greeley, CO; muchos tíos, tías y primos; y sus futuros suegros.
Janeth fue recibida por su abuelo Jesús y su abuela, Mely.
