The Milbank Bulldog boys golf team hosted their lone home meet of the season, the Poet Invitational, on Thursday, August 22, at the Whetstone Creek Golf Course. The locals wrapped up the day with eighth place in the team standings. They netted a team score of 456. “With it being our home meet, I was hoping the scores would have been a little better,” expressed Bulldog head coach, Mark Keeton. “This is tournament golf, which is very hard to replicate during the off season. We are starting three new faces who had no varsity experience heading into the season. I knew there was going to be a learning curve. Now we will just have to see how much we can improve during the year.”
The Watertown junior varsity team won the meet with a team score of 352. Aberdeen Roncalli came in second with a 358. Rounding out the team scores were Sioux Valley, 370; Sisseton, 377; Redfield, 421; Flandreau Public, 449, and Aberdeen Central JV, 463. Tiospa Zina did not field a complete team.
Junior Logan Meyer led the Dawgs with a 101. He shot a 55 on the front nine and fired in a 46 on the back. “Logan had a solid back nine, which is encouraging going forward,” stated Keeton.
Other locals included Jake Trevett, 104; Logan Fenhaus, 116; Eric Van Sambeek, 135, and Carter Phinney, 149. “The biggest thing that we need to work on is our course management,” noted Coach Keeton.
Eli Fischer is the only senior on the boy’s golf team this season. “Right now, we are working on some swing issues with Eli,” explained Coach Keeton. “We hope to get him out there playing soon.”
Fisher was a state qualifier a year ago, along with junior Jake Trevett. “I would like to see Eli compete at the state tournament again this year,” Keeton added. “I look for Eli, Jake, and Logan to help lead this team. All three have varsity experience. Our goal for this year is to improve each and every week, and to be playing our best golf by the region tournament.”
