Over 200 families have food in their cupboards thanks to the food giveaway sponsored by the Grant County Christian Service Council and Feeding South Dakota on August 21. Brenda Maass, co-coordinator of the event for GCCSC, says, “We received the most food ever from Feeding South Dakota – nearly four and a half tons – and helped the highest number of families – 219. All at a cost of only $673 to the Christian Service Council.” In April and June, each event served 170 families.

Maass says, “We were blessed to have 63 volunteers representing nine area churches, local businesses, and community organizations. We were also fortunate to be awarded a grant from Bombas this year. Bombas gave us 1000 pairs of socks to give away at various Christian Service Council events. So, many families at the giveaway received a pair of socks, too.”

Valley Queen volunteered the use of a forklift to help unload the Feeding South Dakota truck and donated cheese to the giveaway. Runnings provided shopping carts and donated grocery bags. United Hardware donated cardboard boxes. The Valley Express donated advertising.

Maass reminds area families, “The next and last giveaway of the year is scheduled for Wednesday, October 9.” Keep up with The Valley Express for details.
