Janice Witherspoon, age 84, of Milbank, (formerly of LaBolt), died on September 2, 2019, surrounded by her family.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, September 5, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Milbank. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the Mass. Fr. Gary DeRouchey will celebrate the Mass, and burial will be at LaBolt Cemetery.
Janice Witherspoon was born on March 11, 1935, to Nick and Malinda (Helm) Peschong of rural Milbank. She attended grade school in LaBolt and graduated from Milbank High School. After graduation, she lived and worked in Waukegan, IL.
Janice married Leo Witherspoon of Madison, MO, at Great Lakes, IL, on September 17, 1954, while Leo was in the U.S. Navy. They were blessed with 51 years of marriage and five children: Mary, Lenore, Lisa, Nick, and Kathy.
Janice lived in Illinois, California, Japan, New York, Spain, Virginia, and Maryland while her husband was in the U.S. Navy. She worked for the Department of Defense in Washington, D.C. In 1988, she retired after 20 years of service. She worked as a Logistics Manager at the time of her retirement. She enjoyed her work very much.
After retirement, Janice and Leo moved to LaBolt in June of 1988. She helped develop the LaBolt Mini Mall. She moved to her home in Milbank in 2010.
Janice enjoyed being the correspondent of the LaBolt News for the Grant County Review for nine years. She enjoyed playing cards and was a member of the Duplicate Bridge Club in Milbank. She also liked bowling, fishing, playing Bridge online, all the family pets, and flower gardening. Most of all, Janice enjoyed visiting with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her family was very important to her, and her love seemed to grow deeper with each generation.
Janice is survived by her children: Mary (Doug) Soule of Olalla, WA; Lenore (Daniel) Kalber of Milbank, SD; Nicholas (Terri Guy) Witherspoon of Pasadena, MD; and Kathy (Arnie) Benson of Sisseton, SD; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa (Tim) Honaker; three sisters: Ardelle Carlson, Mary Knott, and Dorothy Berg Schuelke; three brothers: Dale Peschong, Roger Peschong, and Gerald Peschong.
