The Milbank boys’ cross country team defended their Northeast Conference title on Wednesday, October 9. They edged out Webster for the top spot with 22 points. Webster finished second with 25. Head coach Eric Townsend said, “We knew Webster would run very well on their home course and they did.” Milbank now competes in the Region 1A meet in Webster on Thursday, October 17, in hopes of punching their ticket to the state meet.

Five of the eight runners from MHS earned a top-20 medal in the boys’ 5K race. Nick Batchelor won the NEC title with a time of 16:46.25. Zippy Bock landed in third place. Brady Femling was right behind in fourth. James Batchelor took 15th place, and Alex Farrell finished 16th. Isaac Graham was 23rd ; Cade Howard, 27th; and Ryan O’Farrell, 28th.

The Milbank girls’ team was named the Northeast Conference runner-up with 37 points. They were outdistanced by Aberdeen Roncalli, who won the meet with 19 points. “The Roncalli girls ran outstanding,” said Townsend. “We knew coming in that we were going to have to run very well to beat them. I did think our girls ran well, but Roncalli just ran better.”

Eight Lady Bulldogs earned a top-20 medal in the meet. Ashlyn O’Farrell led Milbank with a sixth-place finish. Ellie Neugebauer placed eighth. Danica Schulte finished 11th; Maurina Street, 12th; and Kynlee Speidel, 13th. Also in the top 20, were Amaya Street at 16th; Julia Wiik, 17th; and Emily Van Hoorn, 19th. Allison Leddy came in at 28th; Savana Osowski, 32nd; Nadia Thue, 33rd; and Addie Farrell, 39th.

“To have this many boys and girls in the top 20 is outstanding,” stated Townsend. “No other team had more top-20 place winners. Our junior varsity girls also dominated, placing five girls in the top six.”
