The Lady Bulldogs captured seventh place at the Hub City Invitational meet in Aberdeen on Saturday, December 14. “This was one of our largest meets of the year,” said Milbank’s head coach, Amber Fraasch. The meet included 14 teams – 11 Class AA teams and three Class A teams.

The Capital Cup format was used. Each team warms up for their event in the practice gym and then competes in the next rotation in the competitive gym.

“This is easier on the gymnasts as they do not have to warm up as often and reduces the amount of time between warm-ups and competition,” explained Fraasch. “We normally only see this format at the state meet, but due to the size and length of time for this meet, Aberdeen tried it.”

Milbank started the day on the balance beam with two no-fall routines by Dani Yamaura and Greta Snaza. “This was much better than our previous meet, but the judges were very tough on connections,” said Fraasch. “Because they considered many of our connections broken, we did not get credit for them and our scores reflected this.”

Yamaura secured her third qualifying score on the beam. She is now officially qualified for the individual competition at the state meet.

The Lady Bulldogs upgraded their floor routines to include full event requirements with additional bonus skills. “It was nice to see five solid scores of 8.0 or greater again on this event,” said Fraasch. Yamaura obtained her first qualifying score of the season on the event with a 8.75.

Milbank wrapped up the meet with five 8.0 plus vaults and were five-of-five in their bar routines. “We have started to add new skills to bars and a few new vaults, and we hope to have even more in the next few meets,” said Fraasch.
