The Milbank Bulldogs and the Aberdeen Roncalli Cavaliers took it down to the wire, but the Bulldogs claimed the win at 52-50 on December 19 at the Milbank Armory. The Bulldogs’ season record now sits at 1-2.
“I couldn’t be more proud of our young men for fighting, keeping their heads, and finding a way to get out of there with a W,” said Milbank’s head basketball coach, Logan Diede. “They are a fun group to coach and watch grow, and I believe we grew a lot through this game’s adversity.”
Milbank led 13-9 at the end of the opening quarter and maintained their lead at 24-19 at the midway mark. The Bulldogs outscored the Cavs 13-7 in the third period. They also led by a comfortable margin at 37-26 heading into the final stanza. But, the Cavaliers were not leaving without a fight. Roncalli began firing from the three-point mark and found the net. The Cavs outscored the Dawgs 24-15 in the final quarter, but Milbank proved too much for them in the end. The Bulldogs were victorious at 52-50 .
“We controlled the majority of the game,” said Diede. “Some unfortunate turnovers, fouls, and missed free throws left the door open for Roncalli to make things very interesting, and that they did.”
