Maja “Jane” Hedman, age 89, of Milbank, SD, passed away on March 23, 2020, at St. William’s Care Center in Milbank.

Funeral services are currently pending.

Maja Jane Hedman was born on July 16, 1930, in Milbank, SD, to Arthur and Mamie (Amsden) Hedman. At a very young age, Jane became sick with Scarlet Fever which resulted in an intellectual disability. She was taught how to read and write by her mother and then attended country school at Madison #2.

When Jane’s mother passed away in 1952, Jane moved from the family farm to a state facility for the mentally disabled in Redfield, SD, then in Aberdeen, SD. She later moved to Angela Hall in 1981 and lived there until finally moving to St. William’s Care Center in 2005.

Jane participated in many activities at the Care Center such as Thursday Vespers and the nursing home Mass. Whenever the nursing home had a hymn sing, she would always request “In the Garden”. Reading the Grant County Review was the highlight of her week.

Left to cherish her memory are her St. William’s family; nieces: Fran (Bill) Coppersmith of Gettysburg, SD; Patty Dill of St. Cloud, MN; and Cindy (Dave) Brod of Bloomington, MN; nephews: Michael Mueller of Doylestown, PA; Stephen (Dusty) Mueller of Big Stone City, SD; Timothy (Ellie) Mueller of Sauk Rapids, MN; and Tony (Bridget) Mueller of Rochester, MN; along with many other relatives and friends.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents; sisters: Gladys (Slim) Keller and Alice (Morrie) Howland; and brother, Lyle Hedman (killed in action during WWII).
