Arlo Arthur Haase was born on January 27, 1941, in Webster, SD, to Fred and Hazel (Peterson) Haase. He grew up in the Webster area and graduated from Webster High School in 1959. Arlo graduated from South Dakota State University in 1964 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Science.
On August 11, 1962, Arlo married his high school sweetheart, Judy Sichmeller. He began his career as a South Dakota Conservation Officer in 1964 with his first duty station being Plankinton, SD. In 1970, Arlo transferred to Milbank and retired in 2000. Arlo was instrumental in the development of the South Dakota Conservation Officer’s Association and was an active member even after he retired. A highlight for Arlo was the retired game warden gatherings and sharing stories with longtime friends. He also attended several of the National Wildlife Enforcement Officer Association conventions around the United States and Canada.
Arlo was a member of the Milbank Fire Department from 1972-1992. He loved being part of the team and the MFD family was very important to him!
In 1973, Arlo purchased a small 175-acre farm east of Milbank. Arlo enjoyed spending time “tinkering” at the farm. His goal was to manage the farm for wildlife and he spent many hours planting trees and developing habitat. In 1985, Arlo started raising Christmas trees. He sold “choose-and-cut” trees and a few yard evergreens until 2002. Arlo was one of the founding members of the South Dakota Christmas Tree Growers Association.
Arlo loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter, trapper, and fisherman. Fishing with friends was one of his favorite pastimes, both on the ice and open water. Goose hunting with friends was also very high on the list! Other hobbies included trap shooting and wood working. Arlo’s passion for wildlife and the outdoors was displayed through his involvement with local sportsman’s clubs. One of his favorite job duties was the weekly KMSD radio program every Friday.
Arlo loved spending time with family, especially his grandkids. He looked forward to annual family trips to Michigan and Wisconsin. Christmas was always a special time for him as the family tradition was sons, daughters-in-law, and grandkids gathering in Milbank.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Judy of Milbank, SD; sons: Kent (Lisa) Haase of Midland, MI; Rick (Christine) Haase of Minneapolis, MN; Kraig (Cindy) Haase of Hayti, SD; grandchildren: Evan, Aidan, Edie, Frances, Cleo, Kaleb, Kamron, and Carlie; brother, Neil (Susan) Haase of Florida; brothers-in-law: Chuck (Gloria) Sichmeller of Webster, SD; and Larry (Myrna) Sichmeller of Roslyn, SD; nephews: Hans (Alba) Haase, Brett (Trish) Sichmeller, Travis (Laura) Sichmeller, and Casey (Annette) Sichmeller; niece, Gretchen Haase (Jeff Musheno); along with many great-nieces and nephews.
