Patricia Ann (Brandenburger) Meyer was born at St. Bernard’s Providence Hospital in Milbank, SD, on April 2, 1948. She was the daughter of Leopold and Agnes (Wollschlager) Brandenburger. Pat grew up near Nassau, MN, and graduated from Marietta High School. On January 19, 1974, she was united in marriage with Vincent Meyer at St. James Catholic Church in Nassau.
Pat and Vince resided in Vernon Township where they farmed together and raised their family. From 1996 to 1997, they were called to help establish a sustainable farm for a monastery in Hanceville, AL. They then returned to their farm in Vernon Township.
Physical labor and hard work were not foreign to Pat. She learned to work hard as a child, working on her family’s farm after her father’s passing in her early 20’s. She continued working diligently with Vince on their farm. She ALWAYS prayed while she worked whether she was on a farm parts run, operating machinery, weeding the garden, or making meals for her family. Her devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and doing God’s will endured until her last breath.
Pat spent her life devoted to her God, her family, and sustainable agriculture. She was an avid gardener and preserved all the fruits and vegetables that she grew. Canning and freezing her harvest annually for her family brought her great joy as was her giving spirit. She was a faithfully devoted housewife. She homeschooled her and Vince’s six children. Raising her children in faith and teaching them how to work was her passion. She adored her grandchildren and loved spending time with them. She enjoyed reading, baking, and tending to her dogs, cats, and chickens.
Pat had many talents and participated in numerous church activities. Among her many favorites were painting statues, sewing, making rosaries, playing the accordion, tending her flower gardens, participating in the Koinonia program, and leading the devotion to the Divine Mercy at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Big Stone City, SD. She served on the Parish Council, taught CCD, helped with TEC and SEARCH retreats, and participated in her homeschool group. She had a beautiful talent of patching jeans, which she thoroughly enjoyed. The jeans patched by Pat are treasured by her grandchildren and family.
Sustainable agriculture and organic farming with her husband, Vince, and children brought many challenges, but also new experiences throughout her 46 years of marriage. Her most recent accomplishment that she was quite proud of was completing the Advanced Composting Systems Workshop in Deer Grove, IL. With the knowledge gained from this class, she was able to create a premium compost product to improve the soil fertility of her garden, flower beds, and farm fields.
Pat is survived by her husband, Vince Meyer of Milbank, SD; sons: William (Jamie) Meyer of Wilmot, SD; Raphael (McKenzie Fawcett) Meyer of Huron, SD; daughters: Jennifer (Todd) Sandal of Eden, SD; Rebecca (Rodney) Thaden of Twin Brooks, SD; Gabrielle (Tom) Pioske of Hecla, SD; daughter-in-law, Bobbi Jo Meyer of Milbank, SD; sister, Ann (Mark) Grabow of Milbank, SD; brother, Francis Brandenburger of Nassau, MN; grandchildren: Halie, Nathaniel, and Leah Meyer; Bryan and Allie Meyer; Natalie and LeRoy Thaden; John, Jack, and Taya Sandal; Claire and Analise Pioske; and great-granddaughter, Braelyn Meyer.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Gerald “Jerry” Meyer; sister, Mary Radermacher; and sister-in-law, Cleo Brandenburger.
