Barbara Jean (Farrington) Nielsen was born on January 7, 1939, in Mitchell, SD. She was the oldest of three, born to Marion and Ella (Miller) Farrington. Barb lived in Howard, SD, where she was baptized and later confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church. She attended school in Howard until her family moved to Worthington, MN, during her sophomore year, where she then graduated high school. She furthered her education by graduating from SDSU where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree to teach Home Economics. It was after her student teaching in Wilmot that she met Stephen, and later married the love of her life on July 17, 1966. The couple made their home in Wilmot and were blessed with two daughters.
Along with being a loving wife and mother, Barb enjoyed working with the youth as a Home Economics Teacher/FHA Advisor. She loved seeing the development of her students and was proud of all their accomplishments. Other than one year of teaching in Slayton, MN, she retired from Wilmot School after teaching for 28 years. Even then she couldn’t say goodbye and substitute taught until a couple of years ago. Faith played a large part in Barb’s life; she was an active member of Wilmot Lutheran Church where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School and was a member of the Joy Circle. She was also an officer/member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.
Through the years Barb enjoyed traveling, camping, gardening, playing cards, reading, sewing, crocheting, and cheering in the stands for the local sports teams, as well as, the Jackrabbits, Twins, and Vikings. But her most loving memories are of big family gatherings, holiday get-togethers, and time spent with family and friends.
Barb left her earthly home for eternal rest in the arms of her loving Savior at age 81. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Tami (Nielsen) Vollrath; son-in-law, Jake Eggert; parents: Marion and Ella Farrington; brother, Richard Farrington; and brother-in-law, Lance Nielsen. Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Stephen; daughter, Stacey (Nielsen) Eggert; son-in-law, Brian Vollrath; sister, Linda Farrington; sister-in-law, Patricia Farrington; sister-in-law, Barb Nielsen; brother-in-law, James (Viv) Nielsen; sister-in-law, Dorothy (Nielsen) Keith; sister-in-law, Rosemary (Dale) Peery; brother-in-law, Russell Nielsen; and numerous nieces and nephews.
