Leon Pies, age 67, of Hubbard, NE, died on September 19, 2020, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.

A memorial service will be held on October 10, 2020, at 3:00 p.m. at Salem Lutheran Church in Dakota City, NE. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Mundwiler Funeral Home in Milbank. Inurnment will be at Ortley Cemetery in Ortley, SD.

While maintaining social distancing guidelines, we are now able to gather for services. The use of face masks by attendees is recommended.  For those who prefer or require continued precautions, webcasting and livestreaming will be available at the bottom of this page.

Leon Allan Pies was born on January 17, 1953, in Webster, SD, to Clifford and Marjorie (Meyer) Pies. He spent his childhood in rural Waubay, SD, and graduated from high school in Watertown, SD.

After high school, he served in the South Dakota National Guard and went to work at Old Home Bakery in Watertown, SD. Leon was transferred to Rapid City, SD, and again to South Sioux City, NE. He settled outside of Hubbard, NE. He retired from the bakery and began working as the weed superintendent for Dakota County in Nebraska. After retiring from Dakota County, he served as a custodian at South Sioux City High School for a time and at Salem Lutheran Church until his passing. On November 27, 1971, Leon was united in marriage with Patsy Kraai. The couple was blessed with three children: Cindy, Cathy, and Randy.

Leon was an active member of the American Legion Post 97 in Homer, NE. He was very involved with Salem Lutheran Church and the communities of Homer and Hubbard, NE.

Leon was a loving person and would do anything for anyone in need. He was a stubborn man with a prankster streak. He loved telling or hearing a good joke and playing a fun prank on his friends and family. Leon loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed his Sunday morning coffee and would make conversation with anyone around him.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 48 years, Patsy Pies of Hubbard, NE; children: Cindy (Curt) Weyh of Summit, SD; Cathy (Donald, Jr.) Blackbird of Walthill, NE; and Randy (Charlene Lihan) Pies of Muskegon, MI; grandchildren: Chad Pies, Austin Pies, Caleb Weyh, Madison Pies, Kayla Blackbird, Callie Weyh, Allison Blackbird, and Felicia Frausto; sister, Bonnie Thompson of Watertown, SD; brothers: Arlon (Judy) Pies of Big Stone City, SD; and Alvin Pies of Summit, SD; along with many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Leon was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Marjorie; one brother in infancy; one sister in infancy; brother-in-law, David Thompson, Sr.; and father and mother-in-law: Henry Sr. and Goldie Kraai.
