Robert “Bob” Meyer, age 82, passed away on Sunday, October 11, 2020 at Ortonville Area Health Service Hospital.

A gathering of friends and family will be held on Thursday, October 15, 2020, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Mundwiler and Larson Funeral Home in Ortonville. A graveside service at Mound Cemetery in Ortonville will follow.

While maintaining social distancing guidelines, we are now able to accommodate gatherings of up to 250 people. The use of face masks by attendees is required, and we will continue taking the necessary steps to keep our facility clean. For those who prefer or require continued precautions, webcasting and/or livestreaming is available in most situations.

Robert “Bob” Dale Meyer was born on November 16, 1937, in Nobles County, MN, to Jacob and Sophie (Johnson) Meyer. Bob went to country school until eighth grade and attended Wheaton High School, graduating in 1955. After graduation, Bob joined the U.S. Army and served for four years.

Bob married Mary Lou Gaulrapp on November 23, 1957, in Wheaton, MN. To this union, five children were born: James, Daniel, David, Brenda, and John. He worked for the Wheaton Police Department part-time and Erickson-Hellickson-Vye Lumber Yard. He also worked for the Traverse County Highway Department from 1959 to 1961. Bob and his family moved to Ortonville, MN, in 1961. He was employed at the 7-Up Bottling Company until he attended Arden Hills Police Academy in 1968. Bob worked in Ortonville as a police officer for 30 years, served as Chief of Police for four years, and worked for the Big Stone County Sheriff’s Department for three years. He retired in 1996.

Bob was a devoted member of Trinity Lutheran Church, serving as a Sunday school teacher, on the evangelism and education boards, as a Trustee, and church Elder. Bob served on the Ortonville City Council from 2003 to 2010. He enjoyed pitching for fast-pitch softball for 22 years and was inducted into the Big Stone City Fast-Pitch Hall of Fame. He was a member of the Ortonville V.F.W. since 2013 and a member of the Big Stone Legion for over 30 years.

Bob loved playing music (piano and accordion) at nursing homes and other venues. He also had a special love for his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed playing cards and took pride in caring for his yard, flowers, and garden. He was always telling jokes, helping others, and volunteering his time and talents. He loved going on the annual fishing trip with his sons to Canada for many years, as well as, taking his wife and others to Branson, Missouri.

Left to celebrate his life are his wife, Mary Lou; children: James (Lori) Meyer of Fargo, ND; Daniel (Mary) Meyer of Ortonville, MN; David (Kathryn) of Ortonville, MN; and John (Kristine) of Ortonville, MN; brother, Harm Meyer of Blackduck, MN; sister-in-law, Marlene Meyer of St. Cloud, MN; 13 grandchildren: Jennifer, Courtney, Taylor, Joshua, Angie, Tony, Liz, Jake, Samantha, Kaitlyn, Erin, Becky, and Nathan; 17 great-grandchildren; and many nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Sophie; daughter, Brenda Powers; brother, Ernest Meyer; and nephew, Stephen Meyer.
