One-hundred and thirty kids in first through sixth grade participated in the Whetstone Valley Youth Football program this season. Teams included: four first/second grade, four third/fourth grade, and six fifth/sixth grade. Two coaches and one to two high school players assisted each team.  2020 was the inaugural season for the first-grade teams.

According to organizer Heidi Wellnitz, because of COVID-19, the entire program was changed to flag football this year to eliminate the need to travel. Wellnitz said, “The move to flag also brought a number of girls out to play and some new faces, which was great.”

“This year, all the games were played at Pribyl Park, which enabled us to schedule all the games at the same time in the same vicinity so parents could watch multiple children.” She added, “The kids all had a lot of fun, had smiles on their faces, and learned some football fundamentals, which is the goal of the program.”

“In the future, WVYF plans to continue flag football for grades one to four,” Wellnitz said. “The board plans to meet to evaluate the direction of the fifth and sixth grade program.”
