The Milbank High School wrestling team starts its 2020-2021 season with a dual match against Madison on Thursday, December 3, at the Milbank Armory.  Only parents are allowed to attend.

Toby Schneck and Logan Meyer will lead the team as the senior veterans. T. Schneck placed fifth in the South Dakota State Class A tournament last year at 182 pounds. He has earned his way to the state meet three times. Meyer is in his fourth season with the team and will be looked upon as a contributor.

Barrett Schneck, Leyton Raffety, and Kaden Krause, all state qualifiers last year, return to the team. Sophomore  B. Schneck earned his way to state as a seventh grader. He was injured his eighth-grade year, but came back to punch his ticket to State last season.

Junior Kaden Krause qualified for the state meet as an eighth grader and as a freshman, but suffered a season-halting injury last year. Raffety is a one-time qualifier looking to add to his accomplishments this year.
Other wrestlers vying for a spot in the lineup include: juniors Maddox Hanson and Nick Trevett; sophomores Brayden Christensen, Noah Garcia, Anthony St. Martin, and Paul Van Dover; freshmen Jayden Johnson, Jacob Johnson, and Landon Novy; and eighth graders Owen Fischer, Joe French, Jayce Jonason, Oliver Korth, Reese Rabe, Tate Schlueter, Jesse Schneck, and Nolan Sheeley.

Jeremy Tostenson will lead the Dawgs for his 15th season. He will be assisted by Jesse Krause, who also is in his 15th season assisting Tostenson. Additional coaches are Josh Schmeichel, Ryan Conrad, and Jeff Trapp. Coach T says, “Our goal is to get better each match and get guys in position to earn their way to the state tournament.”

Modifications put in place because of Covid, but unseen by most people include: Social distancing and the sanitizing and cleaning of mats, equipment, and the athletes will take place per the guidelines set by the South Dakota High School Activities Association. Placement of team benches and coaches corners and who is allowed in those locations will be changed.  No handshakes, team or individual, will be allowed. The maximum number of participants for any given event is limited to 112 athletes, or 14 eight-person brackets. Additional modifications can be found at www.sdhsaa.com.
