Elizabeth Jean Bergland was born on February 22, 1943, in St. Paul, MN. She was the daughter of Rowland and Enda (Dalseth) Bergland. She grew up and graduated from Big Stone School in 1960. A cute boy from Milbank, SD, Arvin Conrad, caught her eye at the roller-skating rink in Milbank. They began dating and were married on October 8, 1960. They were blessed with five children: Stephanie, Julie, Paul, Teresa, and Nadine.
Beth always wanted to be a mother and missionary. After raising their family, the couple moved to Sioux Falls, SD, so Beth could begin her studies at Sioux Falls College/Sioux Falls Seminary. Arvin passed away on October 29, 1995. Beth graduated from seminary in 1997. Beth served in parishes in Mandan, ND; Lisbon, ND; Big Stone City, SD; and Milbank, SD. She retired in 2010.
After being a widow for 17 years she married Tim Smart on November 12, 2012. They were married for almost four years before Tim passed away on October 10, 2016.
Beth had the privilege of officiating the marriage of two of her children and five of her grandchildren. She also baptized three of her grandchildren and five of her great-grandchildren. Beth enjoyed the annual Conrad camping trips. Her travels included visiting the Holy Land, a mission trip of Bolivia, and Norway. She was a woman of deep faith and love for her Savior, family, and friends.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: Stephanie (Jim) Trevett of Corona, SD; Julie (Dick) Schwandt of Big Stone City, SD; Paul (Kathy) Conrad of Albany, MN; Teresa (Jarrod) Stoddard of Big Stone City, SD; and Nadine (Brian) Hogan of Stillwater, MN; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and one on the way; siblings: Sally (Ken) Fischer of Scottsdale, AZ; Rodger (Judy) Bergland of Blaine, MN; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Cheryl Conrad and Linda Conrad, both of Milbank, SD; Mike Smart of Madison, MN; Joan (Mel) Diers of Minot, ND; Rowena (Mel) Diers of Aberdeen, SD; and Barb Smart of Ottumwa, IA; four step-children; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
