Margaret Hanson

Margaret Iona Hanson, age 94, of Milbank, SD, passed away on December 7, 2020, at Avantara – Milbank.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 12, 2020, at 11:00 a.m. at Mundwiler Funeral Home. While maintaining social distancing guidelines, we are now able to gather for visitations and services. The use of face masks by attendees is recommended, and we will continue taking the necessary steps to keep our facility clean. Margaret Iona (Zick) Hanson was born on April 2, 1926, in Codington County, near Watertown, SD. She died on December 7, 2020, in Milbank, SD. She was the daughter of Robert and Lillian (Iona) Zick. She grew up on a farm in rural Waverly, SD. She attended  Waverly Consolidated School through High School. In 1943, she attended two years of college. She split that time between classes and going to work at John Morrell’s in Sioux Falls, SD.

Margaret taught grade school for five years at Watertown and in Gary, SD. It was at a dance in Gary, where she met the love of her life, Sever   Hanson. They got married on June 11, 1950, in Watertown, SD. They were joined by their sons: Gary, Arden, and Morris when they lived in Wilmot, SD. They moved to Milbank, SD, in 1955, where Ricky, Luvern, Clyde, Brent, and Wendy were born.

Margaret retired from teaching when she got married and devoted her time to her family and faith. In 1960, she was baptized as a Jehovah’s  Witness. Many will remember her as their Fuller Brush dealer which she did from 1969 to 2012. Her biggest hobby was the flea markets. Between 1980 and 2012, she would travel to the various flea markets and swap meets. 

She is survived by her sons: Gary (Dorcella) Hanson, of Cyrus, MN;     Arden Hanson of Tucson, AZ; Morris Hanson of Springfield, SD; Rick (Brenda) Hanson of Milbank, SD; Luvern Hanson of Milbank, SD; Clyde (Jessica) Hanson of Milbank, SD; Brent Hanson of Milbank, SD; and daughter, Wendy Busutil of Milbank, SD; her sisters: Roberta (Roy) Thiele of Waverly, SD; and Carolyn Meyer of Sioux Falls, SD; her 12 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and sixstep-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Sever Hanson; her parents: Robert and Iona Zick;  her brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Ramona Zick; her brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Lorette Zick; her daughter-in-law, Joy (Arden) Hanson; and her grandson, Robbie Hanson.
