The Milbank Bulldogs secured a solid 66-57 win over Canton in non-conference play on January 5. “I was proud of the effort the boys displayed from start to finish,” said Coach Diede. “Our energy was high, and we were locked in on both ends of the floor. We moved the ball around much better than we had in previous games, thus creating better shots in rhythm. It was a total team effort, and a good win on our home floor.”

Diede said, “It always makes things easier when we hit the shots, so it was nice to have guys like Will Cummins see the ball go through the hoop a few times. He’s one of our best shooters and we’ve been telling him to keep plugging away and stay confident. The rim will open up for you at some point.  And, it did.”

Milbank led 16-13 after the opening quarter. The Dawgs widened the gap to 34-25 at the midway mark. The Bulldogs remained ahead 47-39 heading into the final stanza and held on for the win.

Cummins paced the Dawgs with 21 points, three rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Schwenn followed with 18 points, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Hartman added 11 points, four boards, one assist, and one steal.

Mertens chipped in with seven points, one board, and two assists.  Trevett contributed six points, four rebounds, and two assists. Riley added three points, two rebounds, and one assist. Osborn rounded out the totals with four rebounds, two assists, and two steals.

The Dawgs connected on 46 percent of their shots from the field, firing in 23-of-50 attempts. Milbank ended the game with 28 rebounds, 16 assists, and 13 steals. They were charged with 15 turnovers.

Canton hit 22-of-49 from the field for 45 percent shooting. The C-Hawks snared 31 rebounds and had eight assists and 12 steals. They committed 17 turnovers.
