The Bulldogs defeated Clark-Willow Lake 54-45 to earn a Northeast Conference victory on January 7 on their home court.  The win moved Milbank’s season... Schwenn and Hartman Rack Up 37 Points to Set Down the Cyclones

The Bulldogs defeated Clark-Willow Lake 54-45 to earn a Northeast Conference victory on January 7 on their home court.  The win moved Milbank’s season record to 3-3.

“It was not the prettiest of games on the offensive side of the floor,” stated the Bulldogs’ head coach, Logan Diede. “We got in foul trouble early and couldn’t get any rhythm or flow. Overall, though, we did a very good job defensively to carry us through until we got our feet under us offensively.”

Milbank held an 8-10 lead after the first quarter. The Cyclones came back to take the lead at 17-21 at the midway mark. The teams had again knotted up the score at 34-34 after three quarters of play when Bennett Schwenn, Mason Riley, and Carter Hartman started pelting the Cyclones with points. “Bennett really took over and got us bucket after bucket,” said Diede. “Mason was huge for us inside, finishing at the rim and knocking down free throws. Carter hit the only three- pointers we had in the game and did so at the perfect time.”

Schwenn led the team with 21 points, four rebounds, and one assist. Hartman followed with 16 points, two boards, and three assists. Riley added 11 points and three rebounds.

Other contributions to the Dawgs’ victory included: Will Cummins, two points, three rebounds, four assists, and one steal; Justus Osborn, two points, six rebounds, one assist, and one steal; Garrett Mertens, two points and two steals; Ryker Trevett, three rebounds and two assists; and Cade Howard, two rebounds.

Milbank hit 17-of-38 from the field for 45 percent shooting. The Bulldogs ended the game with 27 rebounds, 11 assists, and seven steals. They committed just eight turnovers.

Clark-Willow Lake made 36 percent of their shots, hitting 14-of-39 attempts. The Cyclones grabbed 26 rebounds and recorded six assists and six steals. They were charged with 10 turnovers.

“The boys earned this win, and it was a total team effort,” added Diede. “I am proud of them from top to bottom.”

Tomorrow, January 14, the Bulldogs and the Lady Bulldogs take on the Hamlin Chargers at the Milbank Armory.
