The Milbank Lady Bulldogs defeated the Madison Lady Bulldogs on Tuesday, February 16, but it took overtime to do it. 

Coach Brian Pauli said, “When we got behind by nine points, the girls fought back to tie it up and made free throws down the stretch. All those game situations were good for us because we haven’t experienced a lot of games like that.” 

“Going into our last regular season game, we wanted to accomplish two things – win and gain momentum heading into tournament play,” stated Pauli. “I think we did that. Credit to the girls for hanging in there.”

Madison took a 10-8 lead after the first quarter. Milbank trailed by nine points near the end of the second quarter, but came back to knot up the score before falling behind again at 26-22 at the midway mark. The locals outscored Madison in the third period, but continued to trail at 35-38 heading into the final stanza. 

The Milbank Lady Bulldogs continued to fight tooth and nail and tied the score at 50-50 when the final buzzer sounded. This pushed the game into overtime. Milbank held Madison to two points in the extra period and put six points in their own bucket. When the last dog was hung, Milbank emerged victorious at 56-52.

Lindsey Mertens and Maurina Street set the pace for Milbank. Mertens scored a season-high 16 points and grabbed four rebounds. She had one steal. Street posted another double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. She also had two blocked shots and four steals.

Isabella Anderson tallied nine points, four rebounds, one assist, and three steals. Tyra Berry added eight points, one rebound, one assist, and two steals. Tatum Berry chipped in five points, four rebounds, and one steal. Madi Thue contributed three points, five boards, and one assist.

Milbank connected on 40 percent of their shots from the field, firing in 19-of-47 attempts. The locals snared 32 rebounds, had four assists, 11 steals, and two blocked shots. They were charged with 17 turnovers.

Madison hit 20-of-53 attempts from the field for 38 percent shooting. They recorded 41 rebounds, nine assists, 10 steals, six blocked shots, and 19 turnovers.
