The Milbank Sealions took to the pool on Friday, February 12, for a three-day qualifying meet in Watertown to finish their regular season competition. “This meet brought together 19 teams from across the state along with multiple teams from Iowa, North Dakota, and Minnesota,” said Milbank’s head coach Jodi Street.

Friday night began with distance events. Amaya Street and William Karels started with the 1000-meter freestyle and Savanna Osowski tackled the mile (1650 yards). They all qualified for the state competition and broke or set a new winter MALST record in their event.

“Will had a great meet with four personal best swims. He also added both the 1000 freestyle and 100 backstroke to his state-qualifying events,” said Coach Street. “Amaya captured a first-place finish in all of her freestyle events and swam personal best times in her 1000 free and 400IM. Savanna had a significant time cut in her mile, dropping a massive 48 seconds along with five best swims. These high schoolers have put in many yards at practice and are sitting in a good position for the state meet.”

Isabella Pauli swam in the first meet of her year-round swimming career and had significant time cuts in both the 50-meter breaststroke and 50-meter backstroke compared to her 2019 summer times. Avery Schuneman set a new winter MALST record in her 50-backstroke event. She also dropped another 3.2 seconds from her previous meet in the 100-meter freestyle.

“Both girls have worked really hard in practice at putting together their medley event and both finished up their meet by swimming a new event in the 200IM,” said Coach Street.  She added, “Amaya, William, and Savanna will all swim a full schedule at the 13-and-over state championship meet in Sioux Falls at the end of the month.”
