Veronica Fonder, a violinist from Milbank Middle School, was selected as 12th chair, second violin for the 2021 Middle School All-State Orchestra. The event was scheduled for February 19-20 in Brandon Valley, but was canceled due to COVID by its sponsor, The South Dakota Music Educators’ Association.
The association cited the fact that the Brandon Valley School District, and other school districts the SDMEA contacted, would not allow outside ensembles to use their school rehearsal and performance facilities. They also relied on input from the event chairs, board members, guest conductors, and the National Association for Music Education to make their decision.
According to Elizabeth Schulte, Veronica’s private instructor, “The cancelation was particularly disappointing for Veronica, as MSASO is the only opportunity she has all year to perform with an orchestra.” Veronica is the daughter of John and Sandra Fonder.
