The Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs brought home several pieces of hardware from the 2021 South Dakota State Class A Track and Field meets held in... Schwenn, Snaza, and Boys Relay Team Win State Track Titles

The Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs brought home several pieces of hardware from the 2021 South Dakota State Class A Track and Field meets held in Spearfish on Friday and Saturday, May 27-28.

The boys earned the state runner-up team title with 66 points. Sioux Falls Christian claimed the state title with 133.66 points and Custer took third with 61 points. The girls finished in 10th place with 26 points. West Central was the state champ with 82 points, and Custer earned the runner-up spot with 66.

Junior Bennett Schwenn repeated as the state champion in the boys triple jump with a leap of 46-3.5. He claimed the title in 2019 but was unable to defend his title in 2020 due to Covid. Schwenn also won the long jump title with a jump of 22-6 and placed fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.18.

Schwenn was named the Boys Track and Field Outstanding Field Athlete from Class A. He was also chosen as the top male athlete in the triple jump from all three of the classes.

Senior Greta Snaza earned Milbank’s first pole vault championship title. She won the event with a vault of 10-3.

The Bulldogs’ 1,600-meter sprint medley relay team of Dustin Gertsema, Sawyer Gauer, Kaden Krause, and Nick Batchelor also captured the state title with an exciting race. After the first two legs, Milbank was in the upper
part of the pack when Gauer handed off to Krause. As Krause hit the 200 mark, he was in third place when a runner kicked him in the knee, causing him to fall. Krause then hurdled over him and continued to run, but was delayed by a few seconds. Krause finished his leg in third place and handed off to Batchelor. Batchelor led most of the way, but Sioux Falls Christian and West Central were hot on his heels. The lead changed hands during the second lap, but Batchelor turned up the heat in the last 100 meters to secure the championship for Milbank.

Other highlights included: The Lady Bulldogs’ 4×800 relay team of Ellie Neugebauer, Amaya Street, Maurina Street, and Ashlynn Batchelor earned fourth place. The 4×200 relay team of Laney Forrette, Siera Wenzl, Rachel Schulte, and Madi Thue brought home a sixth-place finish. Nick Batchelor took fourth in the 2-mile, third in the mile and third in the 800 meter. Ashlynn Batchelor came in third in the 2-mile. Karson Weber took third in pole vault. Ryker Trevett nailed down second in shot put, and the Lady Bulldogs’ medley relay team of Laney Forrette, Siera Wenzl, Madi Thue, and Ashlynn Batchelor collected a seventh-place finish.
