Seven Milbank Sea Lions joined over 600 athletes from 28 teams in South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, North Dakota and Colorado to compete in the Sanford Power Meet. The meet was held from July 9-11 in Sioux Falls.
Milbank’s coach, Jodi Street, said, “We were able to compete against fantastic swimmers from the Denver metro area and Minneapolis — teams we have never competed against.

MALST swimmers who attended the Sanford meet, swam their best meet of the season, and set 17 new MALST records included: Liam Street –  50, 100, and 200-meter backstroke and 200-meter breaststroke Maurina Street – 100 and 200-meter backstroke Maddox Hanson – 50-meter freestyle Savanna Osowski – 100-meter backstroke, 100-meter butterfly, 800-meter freestyle Amaya Street – 100, 200, and 400-meter freestyle, 200 and 400IM, 100 and 200-meter breaststroke.

Coach Street also noted, “The meet used the preliminary-finals format and this was new to all of our Milbank swimmers except for two. The long course pool was new to Emmett Hanson and KyLynn Schwandt.”
E. Hanson added the 100-meter freestyle and M. Street added the 100 and 200-meter breaststroke and 200-meter backstroke to their state-qualifying events.

Top time cutter was Savanna Osowski who dropped just shy of 2 minutes off her 800 freestyle time and over a minute off her 400 freestyle time. Swimmer of the Meet goes to Amaya Street.  Amaya puts in the extra practice time and it really shows at a meet of this caliber. Amaya had personal best races in 6 of her 7 events, achieved massive time drops in all events, advanced every day to the A final in the evening and placed in the top 4 in 5 events. It was fun to see her hard work pay off and place so well against teams from other states. Keep up with the Valley Express for results from South Dakota’s 2021 State A Meet.  The meet takes place this weekend in Brookings.
