Eleven Milbank Area Sea Lions (MALST) traveled to the State A Long Course Championship swim meet in Brookings during the weekend of July 23-25. Coach Jodi Street reported, “We had fantastic weather for the more than 400 athletes from 20 teams who competed.”
The Milbank swimmers placed 10th as a team and achieved 28 personal best swims. Eight new MALST long course records were set and included: TyLynn Wellnitz -100-meter backstroke, Liam Street-200-meter freestyle, Maurina Street-200-meter backstroke, Maddox Hanson -50-meter freestyle, Savanna Osowski -800-meter freestyle, Amaya Street -100 and 200-meter breaststroke and 200IM.
Savanna Osowski was chosen as the MALST Swimmer of the Meet. Coach Street said, “Savanna is a year-round swimmer and was able to end her season with some personal best swims, a new MALST record, and a state medal in five of her seven events. Savanna works very hard and is very consistent in her long-distance freestyle races. (Her efforts) placed her on the podium with a bronze medal in the 800-meter freestyle.”
Coach Street added, “TyLynn high pointed in third place in the girls 8 & under division, and Amaya high pointed in fourth place in the girls 17-19 division.” Amaya was also announced as the recipient of the South Dakota Swimming Scholarship.
MALST’s top time cutter was Logan Dexter. He shaved off 19.96 seconds in his 200-meter freestyle and 10.03 seconds in his 100-meter backstroke.
The meet concluded the season for the MALST swimmers who swim year-round.
