Pastor John Hostettler and Pastor Daniel Lopez performed the rite of baptism for five members of the Calvary Church congregation today, Sunday, August 15, at Lake Farley.  Pastor Hostettler says the ceremony was also open to others in the community who wanted to be baptized.

Pastor Hostettler served as the pastor of Calvary Church for seven years and as a pastor for 40 years before his recent retirement. He now assists the new pastor at Calvary, Daniel Lopez, and says he will continue to perform water baptisms because “I love it.”

It is generally believed that Christian baptism dates back to when Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist in the River Jordan, but today, the practice varies amongst denominations.

Pastor Hostettler says, “There is some controversy about water baptism, but the main point is not to focus on the ‘when’ or ‘who’ or ‘how.’  Each person must ask themselves this question: ‘If I died today, am I certain that I have eternal life through my Faith in what Jesus Christ has done on the cross?”
